Board meeting minutes
June 9, 1999

Absent: Jennifer Hoover, Ron Langston, Forrest Meyer, James Monroe
Minutes of the May and June meetings were approved. The Treasurers
Report was given.
Old business
Second consideration
was given to the DNA donating $500.00 to the Community Center.
The motion passed after discussion.
New business
A) First consideration
of the DNA donating $250.00 to the Farmer's Market was discussed.
The donation would be to the Steering Committee for use on operating
expenses. There were positive comments on this issue and the
motion's first consideration passed.
B) First consideration of the DNA donating $200.00 to the Grace Methodist Church Pre-School Dropin Board for fencing at their playground was discussed. Several persons described the past and current condition of the playground area and usage. The motion's first consideration passed.
C) First consideration of the DNA purchasing a collapsible tent for use at Assn activities. The uses would include the Farmer's Market booth, Jazz in July and House Tour events, etc. Tony and Marty Schmitt will shop for the easy-to-store and easy-to-put-together shade tent. The motion passed to pay up to $500 for the 'tent'.
D) Nathan is coordinating with Sam Powell and the PACE program to have youth work on various cleanup projects this summer. Please call Nathan if you have suggested sites for this crew to cleanup.
E) July 10 is the Drake Park
Scrub Day at the Cottage Grove Presbyterian Church
Committee reports
Civic affairs
A) Farmer's Market Tony and Patty will coordinate the volunteers
this summer at the DNA table. Volunteers are needed to serve
as crossing guards for 25th street. Contact Jennifer Hoover if
you are interested. Several perspectives were offered concerning
the status of the event to date and most were guardedly optimistic.
B) Senior Center Mac gave an update on the negotiations between the City of Des Moines and Polk County as to the exact location of the Senior Center at Forest Ave and MLKing.
C) Lost Souls Café
Mac indicated the business has moved out of the Cottage Grove
location and the new address is not positively known.
Special events
House Tour There will be a review meeting in July for the
very successful 1999 tour. This meeting will also begin the planning
for next year. There were 700 brochures printed and only 30 were
remaining at the end of the second day of the tour. Ticket sales
were over $5300.
Jazz in July July 21st at 5:30 p.m. at the Fine Arts Center
will be the neighborhood concert. The DNA is co-sponsoring this
date with the Drake University Friends of Fine Arts.
Potluck July 23rd will
be a membership potluck
Communication
Rachel will receive articles for the July newsletter, which will
be printed in early July.
Organization reports
Drake University
The proposed Walgreen's at 31st and University is an active proposal
again. Rezoning will be required and before that is approached,
a neighborhood meeting will be held with a Walgreen's representative
in attendance. The main concerns remain the issues of parking
and destroying housing. Dr. Don Adams has requested to speak
to the DNA Board concerning the University's current long range
planning. This will perhaps be scheduled for July.
Des Moines Neighbors
Suzanne Stewart has received the Resident Partner Award.
Neighborhood Development
Corporation
Cathy indicated that Mike Early of Bankers Trust is working to
establish the Corp as an entity to hold equity.
Drake Business Association
The manager now owns
The Drake Diner.
