Neighborhood Revitalization Program
In 2008 The Drake Neighborhood was selected to participate in the Neighborhood Revitalization Program (NRP). The NRP uses a strategy that calls for neighborhood residents, the City of Des Moines, Polk County and local business leaders to develop a public/private partnership that addresses revitalization issues within the city.
One of the benefits of the NRP is that the City's Community Development staff assists the neighborhood in the development of a comprehensive neighborhood plan. The DNA sponsored a Neighborhood Planning Workshop in January 2009 where over 100 residents showed up to help identify the primary issues that need to be addressed in the neighborhood plan. They are: Housing; Parks, Open Spaces & Trails; Neighborhood Identity and Partnership with Drake; Infrastructure/Streetscape; Commercial Areas, Crime & Safety. Planning subcommittees were formed to provide recommendations for each of those subject areas.
In order to not overload the resources of either the DNA or the city’s planning staff, it was decided that only 3 of the subcommittees would begin meeting in the spring of 2009: Housing; Parks, Open Spaces & Trails; and Neighborhood Identity and Partnership with Drake. The other 3 subcommittees will start meeting as work on the original 3 wrap up.
